What is the best cheap way to protect sanded wood floors?
We are opening a martial arts club and have a sanded wood floor. We do not want to apply lacquer, but are looking for some fairly cheap form of floor protection (oils, etc).
We are not going for the fancy look at all.
Does anyone have recommendations?
NydiaMccartney answers:
My grandpa is an old Finnish carpenter and he always recommended Linseed Oil for a natural protection on wood.

What is a safe product to clean my newly sanded wood floors?
I have hard wood floors throughout my home. As I stated they were just sanded, i chose to leave them natural, however, there is a coat of semi-gloss on them. My PROBLEM, i have 4 cats who throw up on occassion, what is safe for me to use on FLOORS and SAFE FOR MY BABIES. Any and all answers would be greatly appreciated asap. Thank You.
NydiaMccartney answers:
There are cleaning supplies that can be use for the wood floor. My advice is to put a nylon or a plastic something where the cats eat, that way the floor will remain clean. In the rooms you can use carpets, it is also warm for the kids, and you can find all kind of nice, decorative ones in the stores. Good luck:)

I would like to sand my wood floors so that I can refinish them unfortunately the sanding machines available f?
for rental are to big and I cannot handle them (I am a small woman). Does anyone know where I can rent a small wood floor sanding machine or any other ideas on how I can sand my floors without using a heavy duty sanding machine?
NydiaMccartney answers:
You’ve been looking at drum machines, which is what most pro’s prefer. You’re right, those are wickedly fast, and if you rest even a moment, they can gouge the floor out. There are other sanders available that are sort of like giant palm sanders for floors – they use a giant sheet of sandpaper instead of a drum. Those aren’t nearly as fast, but they’re easier to use. Have you asked your rental yard? I suspect you can rent those as well, I think they’d be used around the edges, but I’ve never used one – I’ve only read they have them. Personally, I’ve always got someone else to finish floors, it’s kind of a skillful job. I hire this job out because I’ve known other people that tried to do this on their own, and it caused them some problems.

How do I remove rubberized carpet padding which is stuck to my wood floor?
I removed my carpets in preparation to sand and refinish my wood floors however, the carpet pad which has a rubberized texture has adhered to the wood flooring and is very difficult to scrape off. Any hints for removing the padding without damaging the wood floors will be appreciated.
Thank you.
NydiaMccartney answers:
First scrape as much off as you can with a plastic scraper so you don’t damage the wood. Then use either Goo Gone or DeSolve It. DeSolve It is made from citrus oil and won’t hurt the wood. I’m not sure what the ingredients for Goo Gone are.
Good luck with this project.

How to appyl wood stain?
My first time staining sanded wood floors. Was wondering the degree of difficulty? And if there’s a quick learned method?
NydiaMccartney answers:
Step 1: Test the Stain
Before you begin staining, test the stain on a scrap piece of wood to see how many coats of stain you need. Apply one coat to a small section of the wood, two coats to a second section, three coats to a third section and so on. Allow the stain to dry between coats. Once the stain is dry, you can determine which section looks best.
Step 2: Sand the Surface
Sand the surface of the work piece. Wipe any debris from the work piece with a tack cloth.
Step 3: Apply the First Coat of Stain
Use a small paintbrush to apply the first coat of stain. Brush in the direction of the grain. Wear a mask or respirator for protection from the stain’s fumes and open the windows in your shop for ventilation.
Step 4: Wipe Stain With a Cloth
After every three or four strokes of the brush, immediately go over the stain with a rag. Sweep the rag across the stained surface in the direction of the grain.
If you apply too much stain, pour a small amount of paint thinner on a clean rag and sweep it over the work piece in the direction of the grain.

What color wood floors to match red mahogany kitchen cabinets?
I just stained my kitchen cabinets red mahogany. Now I’m getting ready to sand and stain my fir wood floors. The natural color of fir is a little light…what color stain would go with the red mahogany? Or should I keep the fir floors natural?
NydiaMccartney answers:
Since the cabinets sound like they’re a darker stain, why not use oak stain for the floors. The contrasting red and yellow tones will look good and the contrasting dark with light stain will compliment well.

Should I sand and refinish wood floors first or should I paint the room first?
I’m redoing several rooms in my home and the question arises , if I paint first will the dust from sanding the wood floor create a problem or is it better to do the floor first and be careful with painting after the newly refinished floor??
NydiaMccartney answers:
If you don’t mind jumping back and forth you could sand the floors first
then paint the walls
then finish the floors
this would solve the “dust on the new walls” problem
if you spill paint on the floor you could clean up and re-sand by hand with out making to much of a dusty mess
or you could paint first and then do the floor
let the paint dry for twice as ling as the instructions say and when they are really dry , use an air compressor to blow off the dust from sanding…first try and vacume the dust off the floors
