Guitar Strumming Patterns?

How do guitar players figure out the strumming patterns used in songs? I’ve been trying to figure out the strumming patters in a few songs, like Kimya Dawson’s “Loose Lips”:

http://www.tabwiki.com/index.php/Kimya_Dawson/Loose_Lips

…or Boa’s “Duvet.”

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/b/boa/duvet_crd.htm

All the sources I’ve found list the chords used, but don’t provide any strumming pattern or rhythm or anything. Can anyone help me out?

How to learn new guitar strumming patterns?

I learned one rhythm when i learned to play guitar, because it was the easiest one for me to sing along to. I’ve been playing that way for about 2 years..and I’m trying to learn to strumming patterns..but when I sing i find myself going back to my old pattern. How can i break this? its seems impossible!

ConnieManuel answers:

Alright i have the same problem to this day. What you do is you play realy slow AND I MEEN SLOW with the new pattern and sing. If you find yourself going back to this old pattern go slower its much easier as you get better graduly speed up untill your a little above song speed. You will get it with a bit of persistance, practice, and patience the three p’s. Good luck

Ticket To Ride (beatles) guitar strumming pattern?

Hi! I was wondering, what is the strumming pattern for ticket to ride?

Specifically on chord A, when he starts singing, “I think I’m gonna be sad, i think its today…the girl that’s drivin’ me mad, is going away”

And when he plays D7, how do i strum when he sings, “Don’t know why she’s flyin’ so high, gotta think twice, gotta do right by me”

If you can, use terms like, up down up down, ect. But my guitar teacher plays the A string and strums…I don’t know the “right” pattern for that. How many times to hit the A string, ect?

ConnieManuel answers:

I’m hearing a little off beat on the rhythm guitar. Down stroke on the 2nd beat two down strokes on ‘4 and’

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and

That’s basically what he’s doing, give or take a bit of variation here and there.

As for the the D7, play 8 down strokes per bar. It’s quite steady and quick on that part, all down strokes will make it sound regular.

You have to listen to the song and hear the rhythm. THAT is the “strumming pattern.” It’s the easiest part of playing guitar.

I did a lesson on this topic for my website!

You may just want to watch the 2nd video. It addresses the “what is the strum pattern for ______?” question directly. The first one is about basic strumming technique (although it’s only 5 minutes, so just watch it anyways… You might learn something)
