For anyone about to start guitar; there are a few key areas to get to grips with first. These basic foundations do play a big role in development and get you started with a musical approach as opposed to a technical approach.
Not only does learning this way help develop basic techniques (that people diving straight into metal can overlook completely), it also helps develop you as a songwriter – understanding what makes a basic song work when all you have is one guitar.
Really helpful videos mate, keep it up!
Very helpful! Thanks Josh <3
The amount of people I've seen who 'can' sweep pick but not improvise over a basic A minor progression just makes me sad
Dont forget to have fun while doing it!
no april fools day clip, good guy josh :)
Maybe plan out what you want to talk about and in what order next time.
You have great insights, and touch on a lot of the points that are often overlooked in self-thought playing. But you seem to repeat yourself multiple times (phrasing it a bit different, but still).
Planning it out and writing down some bulletpoints would also cut down on the edit time.
Just constructive critisism, thank you for the vids Josh!
Josh, simply the best !
Tremolo picking next please, Josh. Some pointers from you would be dope.
Your videos have helped me improve my guitar playing like no others! Thank you!!
Why you are so awesome Josh? Thanks mate!
Gonna see Sylosis twice this year in Holland, can't fucking wait!
This is such a good piece of advice. Like me, i learned other things before even being able to play a chord…
I would love to see you doing "From zero to hero" series of videos. But I guess that you don't have that much time.
My first couple of years on guitar were spent on my dad's old classical nylon acoustic. I learned my musical ABCs through classical and Latin styles even though all I wanted to do was rock out to Rage Against the Machine. I did not become proficient at those styles by any stretch, but they did teach me a lot about music and musicality in general that carried over to my rock/metal playing. I still toss in finger-style licks here and there when I play clean.
Great advice, Josh. Thanks for the videos.
Very true. I have been playing for close to 6 years, I can play some of your stuff but can't improvise over a backing track.
in my first 3 years i have almost mastered most technique from accoustic fingerstyle to metal sweep ,downpick but i can't play a full song yet .never really tried it .anyway to play a full song you generally need most technique
As a self-taught guitar player, on my 4th year on the axe having fun and trying to learn new stuff everyday. Your lessons/advices are just top-notch no matter how simple or advanced it is! Keep up the good work and I hope to see you guys in Norway as soon as possible, cheers! m/
Does anyone know what thickness of picks does Josh use? I've been using 0,81 mm, but lately I've been feeling that I need to start using a thicker one and since I don't have a music store nearby I'll have to order them online so I won't have a chance to try them out first. I'm not sure between an 0,96 mm or an 1,2 mm.
Dude your videos are great, I agree completely too, so much more important to make good songs than to be able to play at a certain speed or what not!
COMPLETELY off topic… do you still skateboard? Because that's another great form of shredding haha
OMG JOSH KEEPS PLAYING SWEAT HOME CHICAGO AND I LITERALLY LEARNED THAT SONG A YEAR AFTER I STARTED PLAYING. And josh and I can relate with our guitar playing story lol
