how to play “Goodbye Blue Sky” by Pink Floyd – acoustic guitar lesson

An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play “Goodbye Blue Sky” by Pink Floyd. This is an embellished version of the recorded guitar parts. The original recording has two guitars doubling the main part and a third guitar overdubbed filling in and doing the licks. This an attempt to cover both parts and add some harmony here and there. It sounds really nice and is fun to play and not that hard, so an intermediate player could probably get through it. I hope you enjoy the lesson.

The guitar I’m playing here is a Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and it’s tone is very balanced. It’s also very easy to play.
The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non coated strings.

Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you’re getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute to the cause, I’ve setup a Paypal link. If you can’t afford it no worries, but if you can, any amount is appreciated and will help me to continue to make the videos.

  1. Thank you so much bro! This was awesome!!!
Try to tap once (harder) the drop D sting at the begining of the uuu uuu uuu part, after you play the normal D string. it will follow you trough like a base piano. Anyways. Thanks for this awesome tutorial! Greetings from Transilvania!

  2. Oscar Wilde once said, "To be natural is such a very difficult pose to keep up" & i suspect ol' Oscar was on to somethin'. anyway, that said, your tutorials are neither phoney nor contrived; they are thoughtful, ridiculously well taught & have proven enormously beneficial to this aspiring gitfiddle noodler. bravo! i dig your style so thanks again & cheers, man. ~rdwII

  3. Simply amazing lessons and arrangements. Thank you bigtime. I hope more people find you on YT. There are som many guitar lessons out there, but few even near your level of playing, pedagogics and arrangements.

  4. And describing it as "embellished" could not be more precise :) "to make beautiful with ornamentation"

  5. Your instructional videos are outstanding, as is your talent.  Thanks.  By far my favorite channel on the Tube.

  6. Just a couple of terminology issues.  First you talk about the difference between playing a lick on the G string as opposed to the B string. That's not a tonal change but Timbre change. Then you mention a lick that goes C, C# (Db), C, B.  That is not a trill but a mordent called a turn (it's true that usually in baroque era music that a trill would end with a turn.  Great lessons.  Thanks.

  7. not only do I love this version – I love the name 'shut up and play'….!

  8. Great tutorial….others on You Tube have taken your arrangement and not given you credit, shame on them.

  9. awesome lesson my friend , this is the first song i have learnt to play finger picking,  nuff said just shut up and play !!!!
two thumbs up from me …  sooo well done , instant subscriber here

  10. I've played all my life and never learned this song. You nailed it! So refreshing to see someone cut all the BS and get right to it. Thank you!

  11. thank you man this is one of my favourite pink floyd song, and this is the best version on internet for a single guitar. Might take a week to learn, maybe a tab would have been appreciated but honestly is a good exercise to write them down by yourself 😉 keep up the good work

  12. Excellent tutorial for a wonderful track from the Wall. Nice that you incorporated all the embellishments too. This is one for the "to do" list as I've moved away from my electric guitar to my acoustic for the simple reason that I can just pick it up and play it.

  13. this was awesome always been wanting to play this song. could you by any chance do Pillow of Winds also by Pink Floyd, such a beautiful song. Thanks!
