In the mid-1960s, Arthur Lee’s band, Love was one of the biggest on the LA music scene. Bands like The Doors credited them as a big influence. They made a couple albums before really focusing their sound on Forever Changes, which was released in 1967.

They never really got much attention from the critics or the general population at the time, but the album is now ranked at #40 on Rolling Stones’ Top 500 Albums Of All Time. The second songwriter in the band was Bryan MacLean and his tune, Alone Again Or has probably become their most recognizable. It starts off with a very complex instrumental intro, followed by a heavily syncopated verse, which smoothly transitions back into the intro.

This will be quite a challenge for most students but you owe it to yourself to explore the early albums by Love.

Now have a look at the Damned version – NewWaveAlternative film

  3. Lets take it easy on Arthur Lee's reputation people. I donut think he was the world's greatest guitar player. He was, however, something else.

  4. Neil: I must congratulate you beyond words: you are the ONLY person I've seen who plays the chorus to Alone Again Or CORRECTLY! I myself can play every song on the LP, and have done so with the original drummer, Michael Stuart. And having studied the entire record, I always play it like you do. But no one else! Everyone misses the A, G/A part to G to D on the chorus! And done by simply lifting the A chord off. Even Arthur Lee played it incorrectly! Kudos to you!

  5. My favorite band and my favorite album of all time. Why they weren't Huge I will never know although I have read the biography so I understand it now.. Thank You So Much
